What Is Tahajud Prayer?
Tahajud is a voluntary (sunnah) prayer performed at night after sleeping. It is among the most highly recommended sunnah prayers and carries immense virtue in Islam.
Allah SWT says in the Quran:
"And during a part of the night, pray Tahajud as an additional prayer for you; it may be that your Lord will raise you to a praised station."
โ QS. Al-Isra: 79
When to Perform Tahajud
Tahajud may be performed at any time between the Isha prayer and before Fajr (dawn), provided that you have slept beforehand, even briefly.
The most virtuous time is during the last third of the night โ roughly from 2:00 AM until just before Fajr. This is the time when Allah SWT descends to the lowest heaven and answers the supplications of His servants.
Number of Rak'ahs
There is no maximum limit on the number of rak'ahs for Tahajud. The Prophet SAW would commonly perform:
- 2 rak'ahs โ as an opening for the night prayer
- 4 rak'ahs โ sufficient to attain its virtue
- 8 rak'ahs โ performed frequently by the Prophet SAW
- 11 rak'ahs โ including 3 rak'ahs of Witr as a closing prayer
Every 2 rak'ahs are concluded with a salam (salutation). It is recommended to end the night prayer with Witr.
How to Perform Tahajud Prayer
Intention (Niyyah)
Tahajud is performed with the intention held in the heart. There is no specific verbal intention that is obligatory.
Steps
- Takbiratul ihram โ make the intention in your heart
- Recite the opening supplication (dua iftitah)
- Recite Al-Fatihah
- Recite a surah after Al-Fatihah (longer is better)
- Perform ruku', i'tidal, and sujud as in regular prayer
- Say salam after every 2 rak'ahs
Dua After Tahajud
The time after Tahajud is among the most auspicious moments for supplication. Raise your hands in dua with full presence of heart and sincere conviction.
A supplication taught by the Prophet SAW:
"Allahumma lakal hamdu anta qayyimus samawati wal ardh..."
Virtues of Tahajud
Based on authentic hadiths, the virtues of Tahajud include:
- Closeness to Allah โ it is the time when Allah is nearest to His servants
- Prayers are answered โ the last third of the night is the most auspicious time for dua
- Elevation in rank โ Allah raises the status of those who pray Tahajud consistently
- Protection from sin โ night prayer keeps one away from wrongdoing
- Physical health benefits โ from a scientific perspective, waking during the last third of the night has documented health benefits
Tips for Staying Consistent with Tahajud
- Sleep early โ waking at 3:00 AM is difficult if you sleep at 1:00 AM
- Set an alarm โ or ask your spouse or a family member to wake you
- Start with just 2 rak'ahs โ do not aim for 11 rak'ahs right away if you are not yet accustomed
- Track your progress โ use an ibadah tracker to keep yourself motivated
- Remember its virtues โ the greatest motivation comes from faith, not habit alone
Consistent Tahajud, even if only 2 rak'ahs, is more beloved to Allah than praying many rak'ahs but doing so irregularly.
